Why we play

With all the machines and computer programs for making music coming out of china these days you might be forgiven for wondering why some kids are still asking for trumpets, trombones and occasionally tubas at christmastime. Its much easier to sit at home in front of a monitor selecting loops than to work to get a passable sound out of a horn. Playing a brass instrument myself I think I have the answer. You don’t have to be superman in order to feel like one when your sound fills a practice room with a pet phrase you can now call your own. Better yet is the chance to stand in front of the band and hook into the collective groove. Horns are the sound of flesh against metal, the triumph of sound and intention over agony and the reason the brass section will always be with us.
